Why the end of summer is the best time to think of heating

This is the time of year when many are focused on what fun activities they are going to be doing.  When people are packing to leave town, the last thing on their mind is usually their home’s heating system.  As we soak up the last bit of summer fun we must remember that chilly fall mornings are just a few weeks away.  Right now is actually one of the best times to think about the heating system for your home or business.  This is true because right now is generally a slower time for HVAC companies in Salt Lake City, UT.  In general most heating contractors are available for same-day dispatch or within 24-48 hours.  Along with shorter waiting times, you can ensure that your heating system is ready to go when you need it most.  There is nothing worse than needing your furnace when its’ snowing outside to have it not work.  Avoid freezing while you wait and get in front of any potential issues.

Please make sure you perform this handy checklist of things to do before you turn on your furnace.  There are a handful of common methods that we heat our homes and businesses today.  Below is some information about the benefits and potential drawbacks depending on the size of your property and heating needs.

A traditional furnace

Did you know that over half of your home’s energy use is going towards heating and cooling your house?  This means that keeping these units running efficiently can really make an impact on your monthly utility bill.  This heating system functions by blowing heated air throughout ducts that provide warm air to rooms throughout your home by means of air registers or grills. This kind of heating system is called a ducted warm-air or forced warm-air distribution system. It can be powered by electrical power, gas, or fuel oil.

Boilers

Home boilers are special-purpose water heaters. While furnaces heat your house with warm air, boiler systems distribute the warmth in hot water.  As the heated water flows it transfers warmth as it passes through radiators or other gadgets in rooms throughout the house.  Once the water has cooled down it goes back to the boiler to be reheated again.  Hot water systems are usually called hydronic systems. Residential heating boilers typically make use of natural gas or heating oil to operate.

Heat pumps

Heat pumps is simply a two-way air conditioning unit.  During the summer your air conditioner will remove warm air from your house and blow it outside.  In the winter season, the heat pump reverses this method, scavenging heat from the cold outdoors with the aid of an electric system, and releasing that warmth inside your house. Mostly all heat pumps make use of required warm-air delivery systems to move the warmed air throughout the house.
